Thing 2 - Explore other blogs

Hello again everyone, thank you so much for your comments! Be assured that I have tried to return the compliment but am currently having a problem with comments on my blog [I can read them but not reply to them]. However, I will endeavour to get this glitch sorted as soon as possible.

In the meantime, in reply to Laura’s comment, YES to cute pictures of squirrels [just as soon as I can work out how to upload them]! I have an on-going battle with the Librarian as he favours the beautiful [yet diminutive] red squirrel whilst I favour the noble [yet much maligned] grey. We’ve had some fun over the years J

In reply to Sally, I do love working in a Museum Library. My first degree was in Art History and when I originally came to the Museum as a Museum Assistant I thought about a job in the Art Department. However, as luck would have it, a position came up in the Library [maternity cover] and within the first few weeks I knew that library work was for me.

I’ve so enjoyed making contact with you all and I must say that, so far, I’m really enjoying the cpd23 experience.

Ps. I just noticed that “Thing 3” was posted yesterday so onwards and upwards!

  1. Would love to learn more about working in a museum library. I'm a library assistant in a public library so my experience is worlds away from your. What kind of museum do you work in? Is the library open to the public?

  2. Hi Jessica,

    Thanks for leaving a comment!

I work in the Library at Amgueddfa Cymru - National Museum Wales in Cardiff. It is an amazing Museum with [among SO many other things!] a fabulous collection of Impressionist art. Our Library is primarily for the curators but we do allow outside visitors to come in but only if they have a specific enquiry. We get quite a lot of students in, many from the MSc Care of Collections course at Cardiff University, as we have a pretty good selection of books and journals on both museology and conservation.

We hold many special collections here including private press books and 16th and 17th century topographical works. The majority of our holdings are collections related and [or course] Wales related and therefore we also hold many Welsh society proceedings and transactions which are heavily used by the curators.

However, the bulk of our holdings cover the Museum’s main collections so we have smaller libraries scattered about the building within the departments of Art, Geology, Archaeology, Zoology and Botany. The nice thing about this is that there is always a valid reason to take a break from the PC and go walkabout!

I have only ever worked here and cannot imagine how different it must be to work in a public library! Although, it wouldn’t surprise me if our jobs weren’t that different – mostly busy, not enough quiet times and always that ever growing mountain of jobs that you never seem to find the time for? Am I close?

I hope you’re enjoying the cpd23 experience; I certainly am but already I’m falling a little behind 
